The Washington’s Birthday Celebration Association (WBCA) kicked-off the 124th festivities with lively music, food, confetti and the official ribbon cutting of the Celebration during the Commander’s Reception on Tuesday, January 25, 2022 at the Sames Auto Arena.

The WBCA Commander’s Reception is proudly hosted by Falcon Bank this year; Additional sponsors include Doctors Hospital and the Sames Auto Arena.

WBCA announced they will continue to follow the recommendations of federal, state, and local officials to ensure a safe Celebration.  Among the list of safety procedures to be followed this Celebration year, are the use of masks, which are strongly encouraged for all WBCA events, regardless of vaccination status.  The full list of Safety Protocols can be accessed via the WBCA website.

WBCA also asks all guests planning to attend WBCA events this year to do a self-evaluation before walking out the door.  If anyone is experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 or have been exposed to someone with COVID-19, we ask that they please stay home. There will be plenty of time to Celebrate in this month-long Celebration!

“We are doing everything within our capabilities to provide Laredo with the same Celebration they have come to love, but in a safe and responsible manner.  We are certain that with the right safety measures in place we can Celebrate responsibly and safely,” WBCA President Natalie Hernandez said.

As is the case with any of our events, we will ask for everyone’s cooperation and urge all attendees and participants to practice healthy hygiene during your visit.  We will increase the number of hand sanitizing stations, as we remain dedicated to maintaining the highest cleanliness and sanitization standards within all of our events and facilities.  The safety and health of our guests and the community as a whole is our top priority, and we will continue to update protocols with consultation from our federal, state and local officials. The highly anticipated WBCA Commander’s Reception Hosted by Falcon Bank provided the perfect opportunity for members of the media to get a sneak peek of the entertainment to come; not only that, but this year’s event will be both entertaining and informative.  One of the sneak peeks of the event included a presentation from one of WBCA’s “safey first” community partners, A Clean Portoco.  The organization has partnered with WBCA to assist with the enhanced sanitization measures that will be implemented throughout the WBCA events.  A Clean Portoco was on hand to answer questions and showcase the units they will use, as well as the enhanced cleaning procedures currently in place to provide an extra degree of protection.

WBCA Event Committees and affiliate organizations, such as the Princess Pocahontas Council, the Society of Martha Washington, IGNC and LULAC were also on hand to showcase their respective organizations and invite media to their events.

The Washington’s Birthday Celebration, founded in 1898, is the largest Celebration of its kind in the United States.  Throughout the years, the Celebration has grown to be over a month long and consists of more than 28 events in 44 days.  Events include parades, dazzling pageants, fireworks, a carnival, an air show, a sizzling jalapeño festival and much more.
