LAREDO, TX – With an abundance of caution, and a heavy heart, the Washington’s Birthday Celebration Association has made the difficult decision to postpone the annual Celebration for the first time in its 124-year history due to the current pandemic; however, there is still fun to come in 2021, but with a different twist.

“WBCA as well as all of our affiliate organizations under the WBCA umbrella keep public health and safety always as our top priorities,” said Natalie Hernandez WBCA President. “We are confident this is the best decision for WBCA, particularly when it comes to our higher attended events, which normally attract crowds by the thousands.”

WBCA does not anticipate hosting the Washington’s Birthday Celebration in 2021, with the hope of returning to its usual level of operations in January 2022; However, Celebration organizers are hard at work re-imagining the WBCA experience to give an early sneak peek of all the exciting things to come in 2022 – the “sneak peek” will feature plenty of WBCA fun with a safe, interactive and virtual experience. Virtual announcements, fun contests, plenty of prize giveaways and more are planned for 2021 beginning in January and extending through the Summer months, with more details on that to be released soon.

Additionally, the twelve (12) WBCA Affiliate Organizations, who hold events that are independently owned and operated, are working closely with WBCA to ensure their own events are also safe and fun for all. A full calendar of all things planned for 2021 will be posted as a featured page on the WBCA website www.wbcalaredo.org which is scheduled to celebrate its virtual re-launch in the coming weeks.

The Association will continue to monitor any guidance handed down from Federal, State and Local officials, and will ensure that any future decisions with regard to the 124th Celebration be made with full consideration and compliance with all applicable public health guidelines.

“We plan to have the biggest Celebration in our history, once we have placed the current situation behind us,” Hernandez said. “We are grateful for the continued support of our many members, volunteers, sponsors, partners and festival goers during this uncertain time.”

“The WBCA’s mission is one of community, togetherness and above all, safety. We are together in that we are looking forward to better days ahead; and, at the same time, still capturing and sharing a little bit of the festival magic this coming year – in a fun and virtual way.”

The Washington’s Birthday Celebration we all know and love not only provides participants with lots of fun each year, it facilitates much needed economic growth, tourism, city promotion and educational funding that is vital to our community.
